Social Media An Executive Decision

Social Media An Executive Decision Hey look at Greg (fake name). He is having a meltdown in front of his fancy work peeps. I hear him saying, “ F#@K, S$#T, I can’t do this.” Graphite hits the ground. Poor guy turns a fun game of tennis into an ego match with his executive buddies. Greg is a good athlete. MBA from a famous school. What’s the matter? Greg latter confides in me for tennis pointers. Not a pro, but I know a thing or two about the sport. His main concern is how he looks when he plays the game. He wants to look good and beat his executive buddies at the annual company retreat in California. That’s his first problem. Caring how others think. I say to him, “Play like nobody’s watching. Play your own way.” In short, it worked. He made an executive decision. That’s my hook. Famous news media everywhere, Wall Street Journal amongst one of them, are telling us how CEOs and Executives fear SoMe (that means Social Media). They tell us seven in 10 Fortune 500 CEOs have no presence on major social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Those who do, 4% have known Twitter accounts and 8% use Facebook under their own names. I do not care if a CEO or executive chooses TO BE or NOT to be on Twitter or Facebook or whatever SoMe site. I know more exciting people to engage with than a boring business stiff who talks like they have something up their keister. Do you really want to read another article from an MBA schooled executive about strategy? Nope. Even worse when that stiff hires a PR or Marketing firm to engage with me on SoMe. I DO care if a stiff is interested in developing human relationships. I am human. I can say that. I find it cool when I connect and engage with someone online who later becomes a real life person conversation and relationship. Also called networking. Just happened over coffee the other day as it has before with me. That is kinda cool. Oh. Hello Dr. Daniel Crosby. Check out one of his good talks here, Youre Not That Great. So why do they fear it? I dunna know. Maybe because they do not understand it. Makes sense. Nobody really does until they try it. We fear the unknown. Gone are the days of preaching SoMe like a religion. Let it be an executive decision. Continue to lead by example and educate when asked or given the chance. @lruettimann from the Cynical Girl just busted an HR brethren for doing it wrong. Check it out. I get why an executive would not want to be on SoMe. They are not celebrities. Many do enough public appearances and have no time for another spotlight. SoMe is not for everyone. Nobody can tell them how The Twitter will raise their stock price. If a CEO or executive has a purpose for it, then do it. Do not hire someone to do it for your name. And when you do do it like nobody is watching. Do it your own way. The same way I would tell you to play tennis. That is an executive decision. Related: What Social Media Teaches Us About Leadership. How Creating a Whistleblowing Policy Can Protect Your Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How Creating a Whistleblowing Policy Can Protect Your Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As business owners, we hope to never have need of a whistleblowing policy. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly important for protecting ourselves, our businesses and our employees. Whistleblowing policies are put in place to ensure employees they are protected if they feel there is a topic or problem that needs to be discussed. It also helps you as a company identify what complaints actually constitute whistleblowing and to put guidelines or consequences in place if false allegations are made against the company. If you don’t have a whistleblowing policy for your company, here are a few of the main reasons why you need to consider creating one, and what you should have in mind while creating your policy. What Is Whistleblowing? Whistleblowing happens when an employee â€" the whistleblower, or “relator” (the technical term used for a whistleblower) â€" brings a concern, misconduct or questionable act within the company to the public’s attention. When a whistleblower decides to speak out about a certain instance of misconduct within the company, they are doing so because they believe it should be public knowledge. There are many different reasons why a whistleblower may feel compelled to address a legitimate issue with the company. From illegal behavior within the business to environmental damage, employees may decide the best way to solve a problem is to get the public involved. While the best way to avoid having whistleblowers within the company is to always conduct business in an ethically sound manner, many employees may fear what will happen if they bring misconduct to the public. This is where a whistleblowing policy can help. Why Have a Whistleblowing Policy? When your company has a clear whistleblowing policy in place, everyone is protected. Employees have set guidelines to follow concerning how they should approach the topic and what needs to be done if they feel misconduct is going on. A whistleblowing policy also helps employees recognize what is considered whistleblowing and what is not. There are only certain disclosures that are protected, including criminal offense, not following legal obligations or a breach of safety. A gray area appears in whistleblowing when employees become angry or feel as if their feelings have been ignored. “A strong compliance department should, of course, help put a stop to unethical or illegal activities. But it can also play a critical role in reducing a company’s exposure to a lawsuit from a dissatisfied employee,” says Matthew K. Organ, Principal, Goldberg Kohn. Whether they feel like they were fired inappropriately or they are otherwise angry with the company, they may take their feelings and emotions out by speaking poorly about the business leaders under the guise of whistleblowing. A whistleblowing policy can also protect your business if an employee or ex-employee tries to make false accusations about the business. Within your whistleblowing policy, you can outline consequences for making false claims about the company. What to Include in Your Whistleblowing Policy When creating your whistleblowing policy, there are a few things you will want to consider. One of the most important parts is understanding who is considered an employee and who is not. Because your whistleblowing policy is only meant to protect your employees, you will want to establish exactly who that includes. You will next want to create a direct path for employees to use if they have issues they would like to discuss. Make it clear who they should talk to first, and provide that department or individual with the proper training to ensure each issue is properly addressed. You will also want to create an outline for the way other employees should act when there’s a whistleblower within the business. Everyone from upper-level management to trainees or interns will need to know the proper procedures to follow during a whistleblowing case. Finally, be sure to include consequences for reporting a false claim. While you are able to select your own consequences, most companies choose termination of employment or a demotion. Be sure that you clearly lay out what may happen if an employee decides to make unethical or false claims about the company. After creating your whistleblowing policy, ensure everyone is properly informed and trained. Redraft your contracts with your employees to include a whistleblowing section. If anyone has any questions, be sure to answer them honestly and completely. While we all hope to never need to use our whistleblowing policy, they are beneficial to have in place. When you have a clear policy for employees to follow when they have an issue they would like to discuss, you can get to the bottom of the problem before you ruin your company and your reputation. To further avoid the need to use your whistleblowing policy, pay close attention to the actions and behaviors of your employees. Resolve issues quickly and appropriately, but always be open with your employees. Should something arise, having a strong whistleblowing policy in place can help protect both you and your employees.

How to Reignite The Passion For Your Work

How to Reignite The Passion For Your Work Remember what it was like when you first got your job?   You were excited, thrilled, proud.  The opportunities were just starting and you could finally relax a moment from the job search routine. But what happened?  Did the passion eventually die down?  Did you start to resent your managers or the ownership?  Did coworkers start feeling more like sharks than friends? Theres probably a reasonable part of your body that tells you your job isnt that bad.  There are lots of good things about it.  If only you had the passion you once did for your job. The good news is you can.  With a little motivation and work, you can reignite that passion once again. Heres how. Create a Vision (and stick to it) Disney World was a vision of Walt Disney. He planned it and got working on it. Unfortunately, he died before the park opened. At Disney World’s opening, a person remarked ‘Too bad Walt isn’t here to see this’. Roy, Walt’s brother responded saying that Walt had seen it and that’s why the park was there. Another visionary was Einstein who literally created a comedy of errors before he struck e=mc2. His attempts were described by some as a ‘stock to mock at.’ Despite all the mocking and struggles, Einstein kept focused on his vision and had a remarkable career. These are just a few examples of how a vision can keep your passions going. A vision gives you clarity and a staunch belief in yourself. Before creating your vision, you may be aware that the road will be bumpy, but you still persevere. Don’t you? Once you are working towards turning your vision into reality, there will be moments of bumpiness. It is at such moments you need to re-visualise your vision and believe that you’re on the right path. Fulfilling passions needs patience! You Are What You Eat The food that you eat not only contributes to your physical body, but also your moods and motivation levels. The food that is consumed changes the chemical composition of your brain. This affects your alertness and clarity levels and the way you perceive situations. Therefore, it is important to have a balanced diet (preferably home-cooked) because it contains proteins, carbs and vitamins in right proportions (and you know clean hands have cooked it!). These nutrients trigger the release of insulin, which helps in clearing out amino acids from the bloodstream except tryptophan. This ‘T’ element â€" tryptophan is converted into serotonin. Now, serotonin levels affect the way you feel. If it’s low, you feel like an irritable and depressed soul and hear yourself saying ‘Why am I doing this job?’ Get your hands on serotonin-releasing foods like cereals, oats and whole wheat bread. Clutch proteins to feel more alert on the job. Once you’re alert, you can grasp information faster. And we all know, bosses love employees who absorb information quickly! Treat Yourself Waiting for your boss or colleagues to validate your efforts may take too long. What you can do is after successfully finishing a challenging project, treat yourself with what you like. A weekend trip? A safari? A day at the spa? Or maybe just a night filled with popcorn and a funny movie. This will make you realise that you’re successfully crossing steps that will ultimately lead you to the bigger step of higher success. Exercise (But Not Necessarily at a Gym) The reason everyone around is talking about ‘exercising’ and ‘staying fit’ does have validation. It isn’t just a ‘buzz’ to flaunt. Exercise has shown to positively affect mental health. A peaceful mind is helpful for working towards your goals without giving up. And don’t fret! You can achieve peaceful mental health even if you don’t work out in a gym. A study conducted in the American College of  Sports Medicine showed a mitigation of stress and irritability in women who had been diagnosed with anxiety disorder after six weeks of bicycle riding and weight training. Researchers at the University of Glasglow found something on similar lines; activities carried out in the nature (parks/ forests) resulted in positive effects on stress and fatigues. A 40-minute yoga session for the busy guys and a 20-minute meditation session for the busier ones can bring out mental stability. When mental health is in place, anything is possible because everything is controlled by the mind. Don’t Stop the Learning Having the ‘I know it all attitude’ will make you feel stagnated, not only in your work sphere but also in all of your life spheres. The moment you believe you have mastered everything possible; you stop the search, the excitement and the need to experiment. Knowing that there is a lot more to master will help you keep your determination, perseverance and dedication alive. It would be nice to follow what Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”   Enhance Your Environment Following the same routine daily can no doubt get to one’s nerves. The environment in which you work needs to revamp up to some extent. Pin photos, quotes or anything else that cheers you on the board above your desk. Get in some fancy stationary. Buy new office wear. This can totally motivate you to wake up to get decked up for work. Suggest your team that all of you could celebrate festivals and birthdays to keep productivity and motivation levels soaring high. Life Outside Work ‘I don’t have one!’ Is that what you just said? Well, you should get one. Now don’t say you don’t have the time for it. Work isn’t designed to turn people into slogging robots. Waking up an hour early can give you an hour to pursue a fitness sport that you enjoy. Hear lively and jovial music on your way to work. Music helps to get you in mood. Now let’s get to socializing? If you return late from work, get your hands on Skype until the weekend when you physically meet your gang. The most important aspect is to be clear. Catherine Reyes, a spiritual healer and counselor says one must know why they are doing a job. You must ask yourself if it is your passion or is it for the money. Or is it both? Once the purpose is clear, you can be dedicated towards it, irrespective of the roadblocks. This clarity helps you pull up your socks and motivation levels when the graph starts going down. So, now it’s time to continue the walk towards success. Hire A Hero Why Veterans Are Still Struggling For Jobs - CareerEnlightenment.com

very useful so I went off on my own. I think the Ministry of Defense should be doing more. The schemes have the right idea but theyre not fulfilling that role. What’s the upshot? While there’s still a way to go towards equalizing ex-soldiers’ chances on the job circuit, the statistics show we’re getting there. It’s just a question of dropping the military jargon and seeing new-made veterans for what they are: fresh recruits.
